Telling stories, connecting with people

Multimedia storytelling

Who am I?

My name is Marita Pérez Díaz. I recently received my MA in Magazine, Newspaper and Online Journalism at Newhouse in Syracuse University, where I was awarded a Graduate Fellowship for the 2017-2018 academic year. I have worked in Cuba and the United States as a reporter and editor since 2014 for the American publication OnCuba News. I would like to use technology, multimedia and digital skills to tell the stories of people without a voice.

Documenting and capturing moments, process and featuring the history makers

Stories of Cuban people, back in the island, and immigrants in Miami. Covering all the process of legal concerns, policies of both governments that affects Cuban families and interviews with second-generation of Cuban-Americans.

Local community (Miami-Broward)

Climate change, local elections, politics and economics, entrepreneurs, book and art fairs, museum exhibitions, cruise fairs...

Cuba-USA Relations

Reporting since 2014 about the normalization process and all the ups and downs of politics between the two countries. From covering the visit of the Cuban president in the United Nations to being in the Tower of Liberty reporting on past Bolton approach to Latin America and Cuba.

Area of Expertise!

Reporter, photographer, videographer, with a multimedia approach to tell stories of any kind. From a profile or interview of different personalities, to a video report of presidential elections in Miami or a documentation of the last cruise ship that returned from Cuba. Transcription, translation and captioned videos to English and Spanish accordingly.

Developed monetization strategy from zero, using Instant Articles. Managed multiple paid campaigns on Facebook with small budget, delivering thousands of new likes for the page.  Creating and discussing with a team of two other people the monthly strategy for sharing content on social media.

General Producer and main editor of a digital channel in Youtube, Facebook and WordPress with more than 10 different programs, with a schedule of a daily video. Manager of teams of designers, reporters, editors, programmers, conductors and community managers for different projects in a regular basis.

Created a list of more than 6k emails in less than a month and kept adding new users from a CTA placed in Instant Articles in Facebook. Designed and edited a weekly news campaign on Mailchimp with more than 30% of openings for over 2 years already.

As part of the monetization strategy, I personally developed and sold half dozen of packages of advertisement. They included written articles, crossposting videos and creating FB and Instagram stories. I executed every and each step of the process, from negotiating, signing contracts and creating and publishing the content.

Spanish (native) and English. A little bit of French, HTML, Java Script, Dart, CSS and enough of the Morse code to ask for help in a deserted island.

data visualization, video editing and more

Some examples of what I can do.

No matter the format, what is more important is the content and how to present it in the best way.
